Traveling to Antigua Guatemala: Your ultimate photography guide

Welcome to this blog from your Sensia Studio Family. We’re passionate about turning moments into everlasting memories through the lens in Antigua Guatemala. The essence of Antigua Guatemala makes every moment we capture even more special and magical. This beautiful town is full of history, vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, colorful walls, and fascinating architecture. Every corner tells a story.

Whether it's your first time here or you've visited Antigua before, this city has always something to offer you. I encourage you to discover the magic of Antigua and preserve those authentic, genuine, and real moments in photographs that will last forever.

In this guide, we'll take you through the best spots for your photo sessions and share some handy tips to make the most of your stay in this beautiful town. Let’s embark on this journey together and create memories that will last a lifetime!

Some of the Best Places for Your Photography in Antigua Guatemala:

Santa Catalina Arch: One of Antigua's most iconic monuments. The arch, with the Water Volcano in the background, is breathtaking. It's definitely a must-visit for tourists and locals. This beautiful spot holds so many memories; let yours be no exception!

Ruins of Antigua: There's a variety of ruins to choose from in Antigua, but whichever you mark on your list, you'll have photos with a unique touch. Some of our favorites include Capuchinas, Santa Clara, and San José Cathedral. We particularly recommend these for engagement and wedding sessions, though they're ideal for any type of photo shoot. Please note, there's a Q1000 cash fee in quetzales (Guatemala Currency) per session payable at the entrance of the Ruins, covering entry for up to 10 people. (No advance reservations possible)

Churches of Antigua: Like the ruins, there are plenty of colonial churches around Antigua. Their architecture and artistic details provide the perfect backdrop for capturing those special memories. Some of our favorites are La Catedral and Iglesia La Merced.

Colorful Colonial Walls/Houses: In the everyday stroll through Antigua's streets, surrounded by colorful colonial walls adorned with bougainvillea, you'll find fascinating shots. Every corner of the city has the ability to tell a story through its architecture and vibrant color palette.

Best Times for Photography:

The golden hours, just after sunrise and right before sunset, offer the best natural light for photography in Antigua. During these hours, the soft, warm light enhances architectural details and adds a magical glow to your photos.

During the rainy season (May-October), we recommend morning sessions. Although the weather is unpredictable, mornings tend to be clear with rainy afternoons.

Travel Tips:

What to Wear: For photo sessions, wear comfortable clothing. Whether you prefer neutral or colorful attire, both options complement Antigua's vibrant backgrounds perfectly. We also enjoy supporting you in the process, so we've prepared a guide with outfit ideas that we share with our clients before the session. It's important to wear sturdy footwear to ensure your safety during the session, as many streets, if not most, are cobblestone.

Avoiding Crowds: To avoid crowds and get the best shots, visit popular places between Monday and Thursday, especially in the morning. At the Arch, we recommend between 6AM and 7AM, as these are the least crowded hours. For ruins, any time between 9AM and 5PM.

Also, take the opportunity to explore less popular streets; you'd be surprised by the number of stunning, less frequented spots in Antigua Guatemala for photography.

Safety: Antigua is generally safe, but like any tourist destination, keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings. Carry only what's necessary and store valuables in a safe place.

Local Guides and Transportation: To reach more remote and lesser-known places, consider hiring a local tour guide service. They can provide valuable information and ensure you have a safe and enriching experience.

Why Choose a Professional Photographer in Antigua:

Benefits of Hiring a Local Photographer: Hiring a local professional photographer ensures you get the best shots of your visit to Antigua and make the most of it. We know the best spots, ideal lighting, and perfect times to capture those special moments in the city's magic. We can also share an authentic perspective of life in Antigua, along with recommendations that will further enrich your trip.
